Police: Knife attacker targeted severely disabled
Japanese police say the suspect in one of the country’s worst mass killings targeted people with severe disabilities.
Twenty-six-year-old Satoshi Uematsu is accused of killing 19 people and injuring 26 others in the knife attack on Tuesday at a care home for the disabled in Sagamihara, west of Tokyo.
He used to work at the home and lived nearby.
Police have told NHK that most of the victims, who were residents aged between 19 and 70, had severe disabilities.
Investigators believe that Uematsu used 3 knives and moved around the facility attacking residents.
His former colleagues reportedly told police that Uematsu said in February it was pointless for people with severe disabilities to keep on living.
