「忖度（そんたく）」は英語でどう訳されたか？森友学園問題

テレビで見ない日はない「森友学園」問題。

日本外国特派員協会での英語記者会見において

「忖度（そんたく）」という言葉が問題になりました。

「安倍首相または夫人の意志を忖度して動いたのではないかと思っています」の籠池氏の回答は、

当初、英語では以下のように通訳されていました。

I believe that perhaps PM Abe or his wife were reading between the lines, that there was a mutual understanding between us.

between the lines: 行間を読んで。（はっきりと言ってはいないが、行間を読んでそう推測していた）

「安倍首相は口利きしてないでしょ。忖度したということです」との籠池氏の回答は以下のように。

I don’t think there is direct influence from Prime Minister Abe.

I think that he, that there was a, “surmise,” he read between the lines about what, there was a…

この部分で「忖度」は初め、「surmise」と訳されていました。

Surmiseは「推測する」などの意味があります。

隣にいた弁護士さんらしき人が、Excuse me… と「忖度」を英語ですばらしく解説してくれました。

日本語でも初めて聞いた「忖度」の言葉、英語で聞く方がはっきり分かりました。

いくつか言葉を欠いているようですが、籠池氏が「忖度」という言葉で表現しようとしたのは、安倍首相によってではなく、安倍首相の周りにいる人々が何らか手を加えたということです。「忖度」というのは自分自身で何かするという時に使われる言葉ではなく、安倍首相の周囲の人間、もしくは子分の人間が何かしたという意味になります。

I think he is missing a couple of words, what he is trying to say is, when he said he was doing “sontaku”, that something done by people around him, and not by Abe. “Sontaku” is not a word that you use by yourself. When you say “sontaku,” Abe is probably, people around, or you know, people who are underlings of Abe.

続いて、もう一人の通訳もこのように付け加えた。

通訳からの情報として付け加えますが、「忖度」という言葉が英語通訳で少々混乱を招いているようです。何通りかの言い方がありますが、「conjecture（推測）」「surmise（推測する）」「reading between the lines（行間を読む）」「reading what someone is implying（誰かが暗示していることを汲み取る）」などがそれに当たります。英語で「忖度」を直接言い換える言葉はありません。念のため申し上げました。

Just to add as an interpreter’s note, the word “sontaku” is leading to some confusion in the English translation. There are several different ways to say this; whether it’s “conjecture” or “surmise,” “reading between the lines,” “reading what someone is implying.” So there is not one direct word in English which is what lead to this, just to add some information.
