UNESCO adds Tokyo museum to World Heritage list
The UN cultural agency has decided to add the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo to its list of World Heritage sites. The building was designed by the French architect Le Corbusier.
UNESCO’s World Heritage committee announced the decision in Istanbul on Sunday. The meeting had been suspended because of the attempted coup in Turkey.
Seven countries including Japan and France had jointly recommended the designation of 17 buildings designed by Le Corbusier as a single entry.
The application stated that Le Corbusier had a great influence on buildings and urban projects in the 20th century.
The UNESCO committee says the buildings are masterpieces representing creative talent from the 20th century, and have had a significant impact on architecture worldwide.
This was the third application for the museum that was built in 1959 in Taito Ward in Tokyo’s Ueno district.
Japan now has 20 World Heritage sites.
